If your athlete plays a specific position, ask whether the coach has coached it. Ask what a session looks like too. Good private soccer training is heavy on the ball, with short instruction and long stretches of repetition. If a coach describes a session that sounds like team practice with fewer people, keep looking. The other question worth asking is what they would work on first. A coach who names something specific after hearing about your athlete is already thinking about the work, and one who cannot will usually still be figuring it out three sessions in. Anything technical and repeatable: first touch, weak foot, striking the ball, close control, finishing angles, defending one on one. Those respond to volume and immediate correction, which is exactly what an hour of undivided attention provides. What it improves far more slowly is decision making, positioning in a real game, and confidence under pressure, because those need matches rather than instruction. A good coach will tell you which of the two you are actually asking for.
They do different jobs. A camp is a concentrated week that is as much about enjoyment, exposure to new coaches, and playing a lot as it is about technique, and it suits a school holiday. Private coaching is a slow drip that fixes one specific thing over weeks. If your athlete has a clear weakness, private work is the better use of the money. If they just want more soccer and more games, a camp usually delivers more fun per dollar.
Then it is worth pausing. Private coaching works on players who asked for it, or at least agreed to it, and produces very little in players who are being sent. Coaches can tell within one session which they are working with. If your athlete is lukewarm, try a single session rather than a block and let them decide afterward. A child who comes off the field wanting to go back is worth booking for. One who is relieved it is over is telling you something useful.
Ideally yes. Handling, footwork, angles, distribution, and dealing with crosses are a different discipline from outfield technique, and an outfield coach will usually admit they are guessing at it. Not every coach lists goalkeeping, so ask directly rather than assuming a soccer coach covers it. If no keeper specialist is available nearby, an outfield coach can still help with distribution, first touch, and playing out from the back, which modern keepers need anyway.
Rarely, and most club coaches are pleased when a player is putting in extra technical work. Problems only arise when a private coach contradicts what the club is teaching tactically, which is why good private coaches stay in their lane and focus on individual technique. Telling your private coach who your athlete plays for and what the club emphasizes avoids almost all of it. If you are unsure, mentioning it to the club coach first is usually met with enthusiasm rather than offense.
Watch how much of the hour the ball is actually at your athlete's feet. Good private sessions are heavy on repetition with short bursts of instruction, not long explanations. Watch whether the coach corrects the same thing more than once rather than moving on. And listen to what they say at the end. A coach who names one specific thing to work on and gives you something short to practice is doing the job. A coach who says it went great and nothing else has not told you anything you can use.
When the thing you booked for is fixed, which is why agreeing the goal at the start matters. Plenty of families run private sessions indefinitely out of habit long after the original weakness stopped being a weakness. Stopping is not a failure, and coming back before the next season or the next tryout is a perfectly normal pattern. The other time to stop is when your athlete's enthusiasm for the sport is dropping, which is worth more than any technical gain.
Ask the coach for two or three specific drills tied to what you worked on. Wall passing, juggling, ball mastery, and close-control dribbling need very little space, so a backyard, driveway, or local park is plenty. Ten to fifteen minutes on most days does more than one long session on the weekend, because touch and control improve through frequent repetition. Filming a few reps occasionally helps a player compare what they are doing to what the coach showed them, and players who practice between sessions get far more from each one.
